Messier Catalog

The Messier catalog is a renowned list of astronomical objects compiled by the French astronomer Charles Messier. The preliminary version of the catalog appeared in 1774, and it contained 45 objects. By 1780, the catalog had expanded to 70 objects. The final version, published in 1781, included 103 objects. Subsequently, other astronomers added more objects based on notes found in Messier’s texts, bringing the total to 110. The Messier catalog comprises nearly all of the most spectacular examples of deep-sky objects visible from European latitudes.
